{Sew Coordinated} October 2015

The 5th of the month is quickly becoming my favorite day!  It's Sew Coordinated Reveal Day!!!

Sew Coordinated is a monthly subscription sewing kit (sign up HERE) brought to you by Mama Made and Beautiful Fabrics.  I had so much fun sewing up these whimsical fabrics from Studio E featuring our favorite forest friends.

When my kit arrived, I had my 4 year old help me open it.   After petting each fabric, she said "You're a lucky mama to get all these pretty fabrics".  Of course, she's the lucky one because she gets to wear them!

This month's kit contains:

  • 1/2 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3046-33
  • 1 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3042-09
  • 1/2 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3043-92
  • 1 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3044-22
  • 1/2 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3041-22
  • 2 yd of Ribbon - Owl & Fox
  • 3 Wuttons Shank Buttons - Foxes and Hedgehog
  • Gutermann Thread # 322
  • Surprise Notion (when you receive it, leave a comment below with what it is!)

Fall inspired and perfectly girly!

{Simple Life Co} Daphne's Double Skirt ~ slightly modified

As I started planning the outfits, I had an idea to use a portion of the Border Print ( 3041-22) as the waistband and two of the frames as pockets on a skirt.

Simple Life Pattern Co. just released Daphne's Double Skirt which was the perfect starting point!  Daphne's contains both a double layer skirt option (which I almost chose) and a single layer with pockets option.  I decided the pockets were essential so I chose the single layer.

As I mentioned, I had to slightly modify the pattern -- only so I could best showcase the prints of the fabric.  I added height to the waistband to allow the entire border print -- making it a high-waisted skirt which is really popular right now.  The pocket size is also slightly changed so I could showcase just the framed pictured of the animals.  The pinkish purple frames add the needed touch of girlishness for my 4 year old.

Remember those matching fox buttons?  I slipped some elastic in the holes of the shank buttons for easy hair accessories!

{Little Lizard King} Best Dressed Girl ~ slightly modified

The Best Dressed Girl by Little Lizard King is quickly becoming my go-to fall dress.  I love the 3/4 sleeve option and the pieced bodice allows for a front feature, such as another framed animal picture included in the border print.  I used the ribbon as the side ties and featured the last Wuttons button (the hedgehog) on the back.

Hello, little friend!  These buttons are machine washable, but it is recommended to turn your garment inside out.

The only modification made was to lengthen the bodice to fit the framed animal on the center panel.  I have several framed animal pictures left from the border print and I can't wait to feature them in other projects!  They are so cute.

Who is excited to receive this month's kit?  What patterns are you thinking of using?  Leave a comment below :)

*** If you aren't signed up to receive a kit, it's never too late to start treating yourself!! ***

Thank you Hurricane Joaquin for the indoor pics :P [sarcasm font]

P.S.  I've already received November's kit -- can't wait to pick out the perfect patterns to showcase what's included!

{Sew Coordinated} Special Edition: Linen & Lace

I have been keeping a secret.... and I'm so glad I can finally share!

{Warning: This post is loaded with pictures.  There was just too much gorgeousness to not share.}

Sew Coordinated is offering a Limited Edition "Linen & Lace" Sewing Kit!  This special package has been a year in the making and it contains  gorgeous Robert Kaufman fabric (Essex Linen and Raw & Refined), several yards of lace and three different types of embellishments.

 {But you seriously need to hurry because quantities are limited UPDATE: There is currently a waiting list as the kit is sold out.}

{Package Contents}

{Bella's Dress - Simple Life Pattern Co.}

I've been eyeing the Bella Dress by Simple Life Pattern Co. since its release, but just never took the plunge in buying it.  When I had the opportunity to pick a pattern to showcase this Linen and Lace edition for Sew Coordinated, I knew this one would be perfect.

There are 3 strap options - straight, angled or combination.  I decided the combination straps had that extra wow factor.  The fit of the bodice is amazing.  I mixed size 2 width with a size 4 length for a custom fit (*per my child's measurements).

Because I was using a lace overlay, I chose the simple skirt option (as opposed to the ruffle option) and simply gathered my lace and underskirt separately.  The lace overlay was wider as I used the full two yard cut for maximum twirl.

I used the leftover lace border (from the Adelaide Dress, shown next) as a sash and attached it along the bottom of the front bodice and up the side seams.  Then, I simply tied the lace into a bow in the back.  To adorn the sash, I used 3 of the Pearl Organza Flowers.  I attached the remaining flower to skinny elastic for a super quick, but matching headband.

{Adelaide Dress by Violette Field Threads}

As I was searching for inspiration for this collection, I came across one of the newest releases for Violette Field Threads, the Adelaide Dress.  Immediately, I had the idea to use the lace border on the bottom band and bring the contrast upward by using the Raw & Refined for the collar and back tie.

This back is simply stunning.  There are no other words to describe it.

I used the cap sleeves, but added a pleat and trimmed them with bias-cut binding (Kaufman Raw & Refined -white) so I could feature the little gold and white bow buttons.
{Note: My daughter has very slim arms -- the pleat may not work for everyone.}

The pearl cluster is perfect as a hair accessory.  I hand-stitched it onto cream fold-over elastic.

I always aim to match my pattern across the seamline.  My matching skills know no bounds!

{Elise Dress by Little Lizard King}

I couldn't help but make a doll-sized dress to match the rose Bella dress. The Elise Dress by Little Lizard King is not an exact match, but it was close enough.  I used the sequin lace overlay, along with the scraps of the Essex Linen in Rose for the skirt and the Raw & Refined in white for the bodice.  I had to lengthen the bodice because I had a limited amount of linen left.  I styled it with the headband (from above) wrapped around her waist and a pearl necklace.

But, shhh.... my daughter has no idea that I played dress up with her doll while she was at school ;)

{Sew Coordinated} September 2015

Eeeeks!! This is my first month as permanent designer with Sew Coordinated -- a monthly subscription sewing kit (sign up HERE) brought to you by Mama Made and Beautiful Fabrics -- and I had so much fun sewing up these fun prints by Windham Fabrics and incorporating the included ribbon and wood buttons.

As a mom of two girls, I always appreciate being able to get at least two outfits out of each kit.  This way, neither girl gets left out and they can coordinate without being identical -- despite their 2 year difference, they frequently get asked if they are twins. Haha

Package Contents:

These fabrics are so fun!  They are not in my normal realm of what I'd choose when ordering fabric, but I have to admit, they look ridiculously cute and are perfect for fall.  They reminded me of sort of a throwback to the hippie days which led to a photo shoot in front of an old VW van (that belongs to a local church and sits in a parking lot next to Taco Bell).  So we packed up our gear and headed out.

PS... these fabrics were the perfect excuse to go ahead and get my girls started on their fall/winter boot collection.

And here's what I made:

Best Dressed Girl by Little Lizard King -- and what happens when you ask a 4 year old to hold up two fingers for the peace sign.  (Note to self: Next time, specify fingers should be on same hand...lol)

For my youngest, I made a Best Dressed Girl by Little Lizard King in a 3/4 length sleeve.  I added a contrasting band on the bottom of the sleeves to tie in the center panel.

I also fussy cut the center bodice so I could feature the included buttons. And if you've ever struggled with getting perfect corners on the Best Dressed Girl bodice, I think you will love the tutorial I am writing up!

Instead of sewing side ties from one of the coordinating fabrics, I chose the ribbon.  I love this added detail!

The Schatje Skirt by The Eli Monster -- knee length view

I originally sewed this Schatje Skirt by The Eli Monster for my oldest (also featured HERE and HERE), but due to time constraints (read: sunset), I didn't get all my pictures in that I wanted.  So the next day, my 4 year old happily modeled while her big sis was at school!  Despite their age difference, they have the same measurements expect for the couple inch height difference.  Handy!

I decided to make the pockets in the same fabric as the waist -- a little hidden treasure!

I had just enough ribbon left to make a cute little bracelet...

So how did I do -- are you inspired?  What vision do you have for your kit?  (and if you don't have one, read below for signup instructions)

Oh and if you haven't heard... an EPIC bundle will be revealed very soon!  (brb... need to finish start sewing.)

I promise, this will be your reaction when you find out!

Sew Coordinated Sewing Kit

August 2015 Kit

Wow!  I cannot believe it's August already.  Time is flying by sew fast.  As we enter August, it's time to begin the transition to Fall.   This month's Sew Coordinated -- a monthly subscription sewing kit (sign up HERE) brought to you by Mama Made and Beautiful Fabrics helps you do just that  -- these gorgeous fabrics are by Lewis & Irene in the "A Little Bird Told Me" line.

Included in the kit this month are:

Whew!  4 yards of fabric means a whole lot of creations.  If you remember the last Sew Coordinated kit I sewed, you know I like to get the most out of it.  Last time, I got 2 dresses with matching headbands.  This month -- well...

I made items for 4 outfits (and could have made a 5th if I hadn't already used one for pockets and linings -- kind of sad about that still).

Let's start with the fabric in order:

I actually saved this fabric for last.  "Cottage Garden on Coffee" is my favorite print of the 5 and I wanted to make sure I used the best pattern to showcase it.  I'm glad I chose the Samantha Suspender Skirt by Made For Mermaids.  This fall, I'll pair it with a slim long sleeve tee, but for my daughter's comfort on this hot, summer day, I photographed it with short sleeves.  I used the included blue buttons at the base of the suspenders.  So cute!

This Tobago is my half yard wonder!  I was able to make a size 3/4 in a 15" length with "Geo on Tea".  I did have to use an alternate fabric for the back facing... but shh.... no one can tell ;)  And this fabric matches perfectly with my daughter's yellow shoes!

These next two dresses actually use the remaining 3 fabrics.  Little Lizard King has a new pattern  -Daddy's Girl - headed into testing and I begged Cassie to let me pretest it for her so I could make my posting deadline.  I alternated "Little Birds on Light Blue" and "A Little Bird Told Me on Peach" to make coordinating dresses for both girls.  I used "Cottage Flowers on Welsh Blue" for the lining of my oldest's and the pockets of both dresses.  But, I am wishing I had saved it for a second Tobago instead.

I decided to use the lace trim on this version (although it seems it's difficult to see on the bodice in the photograph).  In order to feature the bird (and because my OCD would not let me have a bird off-center), I chose to use the "A Little Bird Told Me on Peach" as an overlay on a white bodice.  I carried the lace down to the hem and used it to peek out from under the curved hem on the sides.

The included Gutermann thread matched perfectly and of course, sews so nicely.  And the pin wand?  Yeah, I needed that!  Somehow during sewing, my pins seem to mysteriously end up on my floor in the carpet around me.  One quick pass over the carpet with this wand and all my pins are back in place.  There is also a hole that I can string a ribbon through so I can wear it instead.  Could this mean the end of pins on the floor?!

Here are some additional pictures of my "Sew Coordinated" girls because well, I can't resist :)

These kits are so much fun and challenge my creativity to use only the kit .... or mostly. HA!

I have been given insight on next month's kits --- you do not want to miss them... seriously.

Read below to answer any questions you may have about the kits!!

P.S. Rumor has it that I will be a permanent designer to showcase the kits each month -- eeks!!  So pencil me in for another installment on the 5th of each month!
