Last tour, I loved reading Gemia's (from Phat Quarters) Teaching Kids to Sew article and loved that she shared her daughters' personal experiences with showing at the 4H show this issue.  I will admit, her article made me tear up, which was unexpected, but her article tugged at my heart.
Timeless Treasure Skirt by Little Lizard King

When I looked at the available patterns, I knew I'd start with the Timeless Treasure Skirt my friend Cassie designed {for Little Lizard King}.  This skirt covers sizes 12m - 10 and is really easy to customize to your daughter's measurements.  For example, my 4 year old has a 12m waist, but is the height of a normal 4 year old.  I simply followed size 4 for her height on the chart, but used the size 12m width for all of the pieces.

***Important -- I recommend looking at the finished length chart and double checking that the length is correct for your child.  This skirt is intended to have 6 ruffles and fall just above the knee.  As you can count, I have 5 ruffles as I forgot to double check the length measurement in my rush to begin so my 6th ruffle is hiding.  Also, seam allowance is super critical to follow as an 1/8 of an inch off on each spacer/ruffle could mean a big difference at the end ***

The pattern calls for a decorative zipper, but I didn't have one on hand and didn't have time to run out and buy one.  Instead, I modified the back opening to have finished sides so I could place my zipper below.

The fabrics I chose were inspired by the headband that I made my oldest 3 years ago for Halloween.  Luckily, I had a yard of the Little Stars Poplin from Mabel Madison in red that fit my theme perfectly.  I paired it with a solid black mystery polyester twill.

This pattern is easy to follow, but definitely time consuming, especially if you don't have a ruffler foot.  I hand-gathered all of the ruffles so while they aren't perfectly gathered, they are gathered with lots of love (and possibly a few choice words...LOL)

Trapeze Eloise Free Motion Applique by Ric-Rac & Retro

I wasn't sure I would work up the courage to try Trapeze Eloise by Ric-Rac & Retro.  I'm sure we've all seen Free-Motion Applique (FMA) as it's gained popularity in recent months.  I first saw it in Issue 7 with her Down the Rabbit Hole FMA.  At the time though, the machine I was sewing on didn't have the ability to drop the feed dogs.  However, over the summer, I upgraded!

In case you didn't know, I have extreme OCD/perfectionist tendencies with my sewing so the idea of "sketching" around the outline with my machine gave me anxiety.  WHAT IF I MESS UP?!!  ACK!

That's the joy of FMA, though.   Each creation is perfectly imperfect and no two will ever be alike.

I don't know if this was meant to be a quick pattern, but I made sure I spent hours creating my little flying trapeze artist!

I loved that the designer included the finished size of this as well as the finished sizes for printing at smaller percentages (< 100%).  My Eloise is printed at the original size.

Good Fortune Head Wrap by Rosie Petal

As my deadline was approaching (and golden hour for pictures), I quickly opened to the page where the Good Fortune Head Wrap by Rosie Petal was located, found my needed measurements -- I made the size 3-5 in narrow width -- and got to work.

This is seriously the quickest sew EVER!  It took me longer to read the instructions. HA!

Of course, these are just 3 of the included patterns!  You get 11 more patterns, plus all the articles -- what are you most excited about?

{Sew Coordinated} November 2015: Part Two

Remember Monday when I said I was waiting on the rain to stop so I could photograph my final outfit for November's Sew Coordinated Sewing Kit?  It finally stopped raining!

For my final outfit, I immediately thought of two of Simple Life Pattern Co's newest releases.  Ruby's Ruffle A-line Dress and Penny's Pencil & Flounce Skirt pair perfectly together as many testers have previously shown.

For this outfit, I used the remaining two fabrics, Meadow Song in Gold and Primrose in Olive.  If you hadn't noticed, the Ruby normally has a ruffled front with buttons, but I just had to feature the gorgeous florals/greenery on Meadow Song.  In order to do so, I merely used the back bodice for the front and then vice versa for the back.  I eliminated the ruffle and just chose a simple overlap with a solitary rose button.

For the Penny Skirt, I chose the Pencil Skirt option and left Ruby untucked.  I felt the Primrose made a great accent for the Meadow Song and wanted that to be the focal point.  Both pieces were made from the half yard of each fabric.

I just love these new fall outfits ...

and so do they!

In case you missed the news in Monday's post, Sew Coordinated will be taking a break.  I know I have enjoyed the past few months previewing the boxes and finding the perfect patterns to showcase the pretty things Breanne picks out.

x Fingers crossed x she's able to resume in the future.

{Sew Coordinated} November 2015

I have been dying to share the latest kit for Sew Cooridnated!  I have split this kit into two posts because I am tired of waiting on the rain to stop to photograph the last outfit.

Sew Coordinated is a monthly subscription sewing kit brought to you by Mama Made and Beautiful Fabrics.  It is so fun taking 5 coordinating fabrics each month along with matching notions and finding patterns that will really highlight the gorgeousness (Is this even a word?  I'm going with yes. LOL)  of each item and maximize the yardage.

Sadly, as Breanne announced this morning on Sew Coordinated's Facebook page, Sew Coordinated will be taking a hiatus after this month.  While we patiently await its return, let's focus on the gorgeous fabrics she chose for November!  The jewel tones of Free Spirit Fabric's Music Collection are deep, beautiful and rich -- perfect for these Thanksgiving dresses I made my two daughters.

Kit Contents:

  • 1 yd - Victorian Rose in Teal - Music Collection by April Cornell for Free Spirit Fabric
  • 1 yd - Anglaise  in Green - Music Collection by April Cornell for Free Spirit Fabric
  • 1/2 yd - Meadow Song in Gold - Music Collection by April Cornell for Free Spirit Fabric
  • 1/2 yd - Devon Rose in Chocolate - Music Collection by April Cornell for Free Spirit Fabric
  • 1/2 yd - Primrose in Olive - Music Collection by April Cornell for Free Spirit Fabric
  • 2 wooden buttons by "Crafting with Buttons"
  • 2 yds of Squirrel/Acorn Ribbon
  • 1 spool of Gutermann Thread
  • Project Bag (to store your project while you are still working on it)

As I was planning out this month's kit, the Merry Dress by Little Lizard King was heading into testing {It's releasing this week!}.  This dress features a boat neck, scoop back, various sleeve lengths and a fully pleated skirt.  It is the perfect pattern to showcase the Victorian Rose.  I paired it with a deep red found in my stash and decided a monogram in a matching teal thread would tie it all together.

I used one of the included buttons on the back bodice and used the remaining button as a hair accessory.

This next dress, the Genevieve Dress by Violette Field Threads, pairs Anglaise with Devon and compliments my daughter's brown eyes and brunette locks.  It features a fitted bodice with a flounce overlay, button-down back and a very full, twirly skirt.

I didn't quite have enough of the Anglaise for the under bodice so I colorblocked it for a fun surprise only my daughter and I (and now, all of you...lol) would know about.

Both girls love their Thanksgiving Day dresses!  I'll be back with {Part Two} showcasing the final two fabrics as soon as the rain subsides.  Until then, here are a couple more pics to enjoy!

If you've ever wondered about how Sew Coordinated works, here is some information.   Fingers crossed the hiatus is short and sweet... lol  (but also know that Breanne is a very busy lady that deserves to take a break to focus on her family and other areas of business).
