Eeek!!! I am SO excited to be able to finally share this project with you.  Some of my fellow blogger friends and I have been working behind the scenes with Cricut to get your creative juices flowing for embellishing your sewing projects!   If you aren't familiar, Cricut is a series of cutting machines that can cut over 100 different materials -- you can virtually make whatever you dream!  Browse from over 60,000 images in their virtual library -- you may even come up with a completely new idea!  Plus, you can see what others have created and grab some inspiration from them!

(Psst... you can also try designing your items before you even purchase the machine!! How cool is that?!!)

I had so many ideas running through my head, it was hard to narrow it down to a single project.  In the spirit of my kiddos heading back to school next month, I decided to start there.  I thought my 6 year old would get a kick out of some fun {cheeky} unmentionables.... that she likes to mention all of the time. HA!  I grabbed my underwear pattern of choice: Mo's Comfy Fit Unders {and Trainers} by Mo's Pattern Shop and started designing.  (Of course, if you don't sew, grab some plain underwear from your favorite brand!)

The day my box arrived, I was like a kid on Christmas!  I mean, aren't these items all so gorgeous?  The Cricut Explore Air 2 and the cutting tools are so sophisticated and gorgeous (and happen to be my favorite color).  Plus, included were 14 rolls of iron-on.  WHOA!!  A huge thank you to Cricut for this amazing opportunity!!

Here's a rundown of all the goodies (colors left to right, bolded items were used in this post):
  • Cricut Explore Air 2 {Mint}
  • Cricut Cutting Mat 12x12 Variety Pack
  • Cricut {Mint} Tools & Basic Trimmer Set
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Cerulean
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Black
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite White
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Aqua
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Kelly
  • Cricut Foil Iron-on Spring Meadow Sampler
  • Cricut Iron-on Glitter Lipstick
  • Cricut Holograph Sparkle Iron-on Gold
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Maize
  • Cricut Foil Iron-on Rose Gold
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Gold
  • Cricut Foil Iron-on Bejeweled Sampler
  • Cricut Iron-on Glitter Cherry
  • Cricut Iron-on Lite Metallic Blush

After easily setting it all up, I quickly made the included note card project.  It was insanely easy!  I couldn't believe it!  Because I had played around with Design Space while my machine was in route, I could immediately start cutting my "Day of the Week" Underwear Project I had saved.  BUT, could the Cricut really cut items that small, so precisely?!  I wasn't sure.

In the spirit of transparency, I do own a Silhouette Cameo 2 and have for about 18 months now.  It sat in the box for the first 11 months. HAHA!  Then, in the last 7 months, I can count on one hand the number of times I have used it.  Only one of those times did I use iron-on (and I only used a single color).  So, I am pretty much an iron-onl/cutting machine newbie.

When I tell you the Cricut Explore Air 2 is seriously easy, it really is!  I was able to cut over 40 pieces, CORRECTLY, in about 12 different colors the very first night!!  The cuts are precise and made weeding a breeze.  I was also happy that I didn't have to fiddle with the blade to cut correctly (Silhouette users: you know what I'm talking about 😜)

{Tutorial} How to Create Day-of-the-Week Underwear

Step 1: Open Design Space to begin.  To design your own, use pictures and text of your choice.  To use the designs I made, click HERE.

Step 2: Organize your colors and begin cutting.  Remember to mirror your images in the cutting process!  Weed your pieces.

Tip: Use a straight pin for weeding the tiniest of cut areas (such as in the camel).

Step 3: Cut your pattern pieces from your desired fabrics. Gently memory press the middle of the front with your iron to aid in lining it all up.

Tip: I chose to sew after applying the vinyl.  It is easier to get even pressure with your iron without all the seams (and if you screw something up, you haven't wasted your sewing time!)

Step 4: Locate all of your layers for the first day.  (I will be using Wednesday for this tutorial).

Step 5: Place your most bottom layer - in this case, it's the black camel. Lay it in place.  Lay down layer of light-colored fabric over (such as white quilting cotton).  Apply the iron-on per instructions.

(Pay attention to which heat is needed and whether you need to let it cool prior to peeling up the carrier sheet.)

Step 6: Continue building your decal layer by layer.

Tip: If you wish, you can group the black pieces together to cut in place -- select those layers and choose WELD. Otherwise, it will rearrange your pieces to conserve iron-on before it sends it to the machine.

Tip: To have letters cut out of the white speech bubble, use the SLICE tool in lieu of a separate layer like I did.

  10. Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article... but I put things off too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though. Legging

  11. Did you alter the pattern at all? I ask because yours looks different from the pattern on Etsy. The bands seem less wide and the front looks like it is shaped better on yours than on the Etsy one. These looked shaped specifically for girls while the ones on Etsy look unisex? I was trying to decide on which pattern to purchase and saw your blog.

    1. If I recall, I do take out a bit of width from the bands. I didn't alter the top shape though.
