{Mabel Madison Monday} Penny's Pencil & Flounce Skirt

Haven't you heard?!  Tuesday is the new Monday.... LOL  (or at least that's what I'm rolling with).

Sooo, my {Mabel Madison Monday} is late.  Monday seems like it creeps up faster than I like. HA!

As I was looking through my {Mabel Madison} stash (it's a thing... and I always need to feel like I'm using the perfect pattern.  I hate feeling like I wasted pretty fabric), I came across this flocked poplin, that I honestly forgot I had ordered.  Hearts Flocking (Blue) by Verhees is so adorable!  There are little red, velvety (flocking) hearts on an aqua background.

My original plan was to do a knit fall dress, but summer snuck back in this week so I thought I'd squeeze in a fun little skirt. [Bonus: On Valentine's Day, she' throw on some tights or leggings and be all set for the festivities at school!!]

Enter, the Penny's Pencil & Flounce Skirt by Simple Life Pattern Co.  - a versatile skirt that takes you from mini to pencil to flounce all in one pattern!  The size range is 2t - 12 and has optional pockets as well.   This skirt does have an elastic back (as shown below).  Oh, and it's a super quick sew!

It took me longer to prewash the fabric than it did for me to sew!  I chose to sew the regular pencil skirt, but I am definitely trying the flounce on my next version.

I know you likely cannot see it (because I matched my print at the seams) but the seams are actually on the front (about the middle of each leg) rather than the sides.  I just thought I'd point out this little design feature -- it would look super cute with a contrasting front panel.

Mabel Madison has a huge selection of Euro poplins and corduroy that would be perfect for this skirt.  So why choose Euro? One of my favorite things about Euro wovens is they are wider.  I had just 1/2 yard of this flocked poplin and guess what?!  I have enough leftover, that my 6 year old can get a matching skirt!  Seriously, I used less than 1/2 of my original cut, making this skirt under $4.00.

Ladies Library Cardigan

Pattern by Little Lizard King

~ with a special appearance from Free Notion ~

It has been far too long since I've sewed for myself -- like since July.  Whoops!

I decided to rectify that by making myself the Ladies Library Cardigan by Little Lizard King.  This is knit cardigan that is perfect for fall, but contains options for light layering even in the warmer months.  The pattern covers sizes XXS - XXXL and features 3 sleeve lengths (short, 3/4, long), 3 length options (hip, mid, boho), optional elbow patches, and deep kangaroo-style pockets.  All of the options make it easy to customize perfectly to your taste!

Most women's patterns, I have to muslin, alter, etc.  This one was made without a single change!  The options I chose were hip length and 3/4 sleeves.  I should note that I am 5'1" tall and the pattern is drafted for the average 5'5" tall woman.  If you are taller than me (like 99% of you...haha), the hip length will be shorter on you.

I chose a slinky knit from Hancock Fabrics to help with draping.  I am a sucker for stripes and if you can believe it, I attempted to match all those teeny tiny stripes up.

I made the sleeves first and #nailedthem  -- then I got to the sides..... LOL

Let's just say I gave up.

I actually finished this cardigan a few weeks ago.  But after I picked out my knit, I realized my new sewing tee that was on order from Free Notion, would be perfect layered underneath.  The day my shirt came so did days and days of rain.  Standing on a bookshelf indoors (from my post, Welcome to my Fauxtography Studio) may work for my two girls, but I'm a bit too tall ;)

Better late than never!

{Sew Coordinated} October 2015

The 5th of the month is quickly becoming my favorite day!  It's Sew Coordinated Reveal Day!!!

Sew Coordinated is a monthly subscription sewing kit (sign up HERE) brought to you by Mama Made and Beautiful Fabrics.  I had so much fun sewing up these whimsical fabrics from Studio E featuring our favorite forest friends.

When my kit arrived, I had my 4 year old help me open it.   After petting each fabric, she said "You're a lucky mama to get all these pretty fabrics".  Of course, she's the lucky one because she gets to wear them!

This month's kit contains:

  • 1/2 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3046-33
  • 1 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3042-09
  • 1/2 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3043-92
  • 1 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3044-22
  • 1/2 yd Gentle Forest (Tea & Sympathy for Studio E) 3041-22
  • 2 yd of Ribbon - Owl & Fox
  • 3 Wuttons Shank Buttons - Foxes and Hedgehog
  • Gutermann Thread # 322
  • Surprise Notion (when you receive it, leave a comment below with what it is!)

Fall inspired and perfectly girly!

{Simple Life Co} Daphne's Double Skirt ~ slightly modified

As I started planning the outfits, I had an idea to use a portion of the Border Print ( 3041-22) as the waistband and two of the frames as pockets on a skirt.

Simple Life Pattern Co. just released Daphne's Double Skirt which was the perfect starting point!  Daphne's contains both a double layer skirt option (which I almost chose) and a single layer with pockets option.  I decided the pockets were essential so I chose the single layer.

As I mentioned, I had to slightly modify the pattern -- only so I could best showcase the prints of the fabric.  I added height to the waistband to allow the entire border print -- making it a high-waisted skirt which is really popular right now.  The pocket size is also slightly changed so I could showcase just the framed pictured of the animals.  The pinkish purple frames add the needed touch of girlishness for my 4 year old.

Remember those matching fox buttons?  I slipped some elastic in the holes of the shank buttons for easy hair accessories!

{Little Lizard King} Best Dressed Girl ~ slightly modified

The Best Dressed Girl by Little Lizard King is quickly becoming my go-to fall dress.  I love the 3/4 sleeve option and the pieced bodice allows for a front feature, such as another framed animal picture included in the border print.  I used the ribbon as the side ties and featured the last Wuttons button (the hedgehog) on the back.

Hello, little friend!  These buttons are machine washable, but it is recommended to turn your garment inside out.

The only modification made was to lengthen the bodice to fit the framed animal on the center panel.  I have several framed animal pictures left from the border print and I can't wait to feature them in other projects!  They are so cute.

Who is excited to receive this month's kit?  What patterns are you thinking of using?  Leave a comment below :)
